Wisdom teeth removal under sedation: what to expect

Wisdom teeth removal under sedation: what to expect

Wisdom teeth removal is one of the procedures patients worry about most. Impacted wisdom teeth can take time to remove, and the sounds and pressure of the procedure can be unsettling. Sedation helps you stay calm and comfortable throughout.

Why choose sedation for wisdom teeth?

  • You are relaxed and comfortable during the procedure
  • Many patients remember little of the appointment
  • Your dentist or oral surgeon can work efficiently, often removing all the teeth in one visit
  • It can be done in your dentist’s rooms rather than a hospital theatre

On the day

Dr Khan assesses you beforehand and gives you fasting instructions. On the day, she and her team member set up the monitoring equipment, place a small drip and give the sedation. Your dentist also uses local anaesthetic to numb the area, so the sedation and local anaesthetic work together.

Two health practitioners monitor your ECG, oxygen level, heart rate and blood pressure throughout.

Recovery

You rest under observation until you are awake enough to leave with your escort. At home, follow your dentist’s aftercare advice on pain relief, swelling, eating and keeping the area clean.

Plan to rest for the remainder of the day and avoid driving, alcohol and important decisions until Dr Khan says it is safe.

Medical aid

Sedation for wisdom teeth is billed separately from your dentist’s fees. Joburg Sedation accepts all medical aids and claims directly on your behalf, and cash rates are available if your plan does not cover sedation.
