Medical aid and sedation: what is covered and how cash rates work

Cost is an important part of planning any procedure. Here is how sedation fees work with Joburg Sedation.

The sedation fee is separate

Sedation is billed separately from your dentist’s or doctor’s fee for the treatment itself. You will receive a separate account from Joburg Sedation.

Medical aid

Joburg Sedation accepts all South African medical aids and submits your sedation claim directly on your behalf. How much your scheme pays depends on your plan and the procedure, so it is worth checking your benefits beforehand. We can help with the information your medical aid needs.

Cash rates

Cash rates are available for patients without medical aid, or when a medical aid does not cover sedation. Rates are based on the sedation time:

  • 30 minutes: R3 300
  • 1 hour: R4 300
  • 1 hour 30 minutes: R5 500
  • 2 hours: R7 000
  • 2 hours 30 minutes: R8 000
  • 3 hours: R9 000

How the time is calculated

The time is quoted for the sedation (anaesthetic) procedure, not for how long your dental or surgical treatment takes. It includes pre-anaesthetic preparation and the time needed for you to wake up from the sedation. Sedation doesn’t usually exceed three hours.

Often more affordable than theatre

Because in-rooms sedation avoids hospital and theatre fees, it is often a more affordable option, especially when medical aid does not cover theatre costs.
