For patients
Relaxed, comfortable treatment with sedation
If dental or medical treatment makes you anxious, sedation can help you feel calm and comfortable. Dr Khan comes to your own dentist’s or doctor’s rooms, so you are treated somewhere familiar, by the practitioner you already know.
Who sedation can help
Anxiety and phobia
For people who feel very nervous, or who have avoided treatment because of fear.
Children
For children who need treatment but cannot sit still or cope with it while awake.
Special needs
For patients who find treatment difficult because of a physical, intellectual or sensory condition.
Longer procedures
For wisdom teeth removal, implants and other longer or more complex treatment.
Strong gag reflex
For patients who struggle with instruments in the mouth.
Minor medical procedures
For minor surgical procedures done in the doctor’s rooms rather than in theatre.
Your sedation day
Dr Khan will talk you through everything beforehand. This is what usually happens.
01
Before
Dr Khan reviews your medical history and medication. Follow her fasting instructions exactly, and arrange for a responsible adult to take you home.
02
On the day
Wear comfortable clothes. Dr Khan and her team member set up the monitors, then give the sedation while your dentist or doctor does the treatment.
03
Recovery
You rest under observation until you are ready to go home with your adult escort.
04
Afterwards
Go home and rest. Don’t drive, operate machinery or make important decisions for the rest of the day. You’ll get written aftercare instructions.
Sedation for children
Many children need treatment that doesn’t require a hospital theatre. In-rooms sedation lets them be treated calmly at their own dentist or doctor, without an unfamiliar hospital, a long wait for a theatre slot or theatre costs.
Dr Khan will explain how to prepare your child, including fasting, and parents are kept informed throughout.
Medical aid doesn’t cover theatre?
In-rooms sedation is often a more affordable option. See fees & medical aid.
Safety on every case
A team of two
Dr Khan always works with a registered nurse or a second medical doctor, so two health practitioners monitor the patient from start to recovery.
Full monitoring
ECG (heart rhythm), oxygen levels, heart rate and blood pressure are monitored continuously throughout.
Emergency-ready
Oxygen, emergency drugs and resuscitation equipment are brought to every case.
Recognised standards
Care follows the SASA procedural sedation guidelines. Dr Khan is registered with the HPCSA and SOSPOSA.
