Safety comes first

Dr Khan is a medical doctor with postgraduate training in sedation and pain management. She never works alone: every sedation is provided by a team of two, Dr Khan plus a registered nurse or a second medical doctor. Their only role during the procedure is the patient’s sedation and safety, so your dentist or doctor can concentrate on the treatment.

Every sedation follows the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists (SASA) guidelines for procedural sedation. Dr Khan is also registered with SOSPOSA, the society for sedation practitioners in South Africa.

  • Two health practitioners on every case: Dr Khan works with a registered nurse or a second medical doctor, so the patient is monitored by two practitioners from start to recovery
  • Continuous monitoring throughout: ECG (heart rhythm), oxygen levels, heart rate and blood pressure
  • Oxygen, emergency drugs and resuscitation equipment brought to every case
  • A pre-sedation assessment for every patient, and recorded monitoring throughout
  • Registered with the HPCSA and SOSPOSA, the sedation practitioners’ group of the SA Society of Anaesthesiologists

About

Dr M Khan

Dr Khan qualified as a medical doctor (MBChB) at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Sedation and Pain Management at the University of the Free State. She is registered with the HPCSA as a medical practitioner and with SOSPOSA as a sedation practitioner.

Her work grew from a simple observation: many patients need sedation for procedures that don’t require a hospital theatre. This is especially true for children. A frightened child facing dental treatment or a minor procedure shouldn’t need an unfamiliar hospital, a long wait for a theatre slot or a large bill to be treated calmly and comfortably.

By bringing sedation to the rooms of the dentist or doctor the family already knows, Dr Khan makes treatment feel more familiar and less stressful. It is also often a more affordable option when medical aid doesn’t cover theatre or hospital costs, with the same careful monitoring by a team of two on every case.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is procedural sedation?

Procedural sedation uses medication to make you deeply relaxed and comfortable during a dental or medical procedure, without going to theatre. Many patients remember little or nothing of the procedure afterwards.

Where does the sedation take place?

In your dentist’s or doctor’s own rooms. Joburg Sedation is a mobile service: Dr Khan brings all the sedation, monitoring and emergency equipment to the practice.

Who monitors me during sedation?

Every sedation is provided by Dr Khan together with a registered nurse or a second medical doctor, so two health practitioners monitor you throughout, including ECG, blood pressure and oxygen levels.

Is sedation covered by medical aid?

We accept all medical aids and submit claims directly on your behalf. Cash rates are available if you are not on medical aid or if your medical aid does not cover sedation. See fees and medical aid.

How much does sedation cost?

Cash rates start from R3 300 for 30 minutes of anaesthetic time. The time quoted covers the sedation itself, including preparation and waking up, not the length of your dental or surgical treatment. See the full fee table.

Can children be sedated?

Yes. Sedation allows many children to have dental and minor surgical treatment in the rooms rather than in theatre. Read our guide to sedation for children.

Which areas do you cover?

We work with dentists, specialists and doctors across Gauteng, from Johannesburg South to Midrand and from the East Rand to the West Rand.

Is Dr Khan registered?

Dr M Khan (MBChB, PG Dip Sedation and Pain Management) is registered with the HPCSA as a medical doctor and with SOSPOSA as a sedation practitioner, and follows SASA guidelines.

How do I book?

Ask your dentist or doctor to arrange sedation with us, or call or WhatsApp Dr Khan on 071 646 1513.
