How to prepare your child for sedation

How to prepare your child for sedation

How a child feels before a procedure often depends on how prepared they, and their parents, feel. These tips help the day go smoothly.

Talking to your child

  • Use simple, honest and calm words. For example, “The doctor will give you special medicine to help you feel sleepy and relaxed while your teeth are fixed.”
  • Avoid scary words such as “needle”, “hurt” or “cut”.
  • Choose the timing to suit your child. Young children do best hearing about it shortly before; older children may want more notice.
  • Let them bring a favourite toy or blanket.

Fasting

Follow Dr Khan’s fasting instructions exactly. They are one of the most important safety steps. If your child accidentally eats or drinks when they should not have, tell the team. It is not a problem to be honest; it may simply mean the procedure needs to be moved.

On the day

  • Dress your child in loose, comfortable clothes
  • Bring any medicines they take and a list of allergies
  • Bring a change of clothes and a blanket for the trip home
  • Plan for two adults if possible: one to drive and one to sit with your child

Afterwards

Your child will be sleepy for a few hours. Keep them resting at home under close adult supervision for the rest of the day. Start with small sips of water and light food when they are fully awake, unless you are told otherwise.

Avoid playground equipment, bicycles, swimming and other activities that need balance until the next day.

When to call

Contact Dr Khan or your child’s practitioner with any concerns. If your child has difficulty breathing or is very hard to wake, call an ambulance immediately.
