Sedation for children: treatment without a hospital theatre

Sedation for children: treatment without a hospital theatre

For a frightened or very young child, even a short dental or medical procedure can feel overwhelming. Holding a child down is distressing for everyone, and it can leave them fearful of future visits.

Traditionally, the alternative has been a general anaesthetic in a hospital theatre. That often means a waiting list, an unfamiliar setting and significant hospital costs, especially when a medical aid does not cover theatre.

A calmer option

For suitable children, sedation in the dentist’s or doctor’s rooms offers a middle path. Your child is treated in a familiar setting, by their own practitioner, while Dr Khan’s team keeps them calm, comfortable and closely monitored.

This was one of the main reasons Dr Khan started Joburg Sedation: children should be able to get the treatment they need without unnecessary fear, delay or cost.

Common reasons children have sedation

  • Dental treatment, including fillings and extractions, in young or anxious children
  • Children with special needs who find treatment difficult
  • Minor medical and surgical procedures in the doctor’s rooms

Is it safe for my child?

Dr Khan assesses every child beforehand and will only recommend in-rooms sedation if it is suitable. Every sedation is provided by a team of two, with continuous monitoring of ECG, oxygen level, heart rate and blood pressure, and full emergency equipment on site.

Some children, for example those with certain heart, lung or airway conditions, are safer treated in hospital. Dr Khan will tell you honestly if that applies to your child.

Parents are involved throughout

You will receive clear instructions about preparing your child, including fasting, and you will be kept informed before and after the procedure.
