Recovering at home after sedation: a practical guide

Recovering at home after sedation: a practical guide

Most people feel drowsy for a few hours after sedation. Your judgement and reaction times can be affected for longer than you might expect, even if you feel fine. These tips help you recover safely.

Going home

You need a responsible adult to take you home. You should not drive, take a taxi or ride-hailing service alone, or use public transport by yourself after sedation.

For the rest of the day

  • Rest at home and take it easy
  • Do not drive or operate machinery
  • Do not drink alcohol
  • Do not make important decisions, sign legal documents or post on social media
  • Do not look after young children on your own

Dr Khan will tell you how long these precautions apply in your case.

Eating and drinking

Start with water and light food when you feel ready, unless your dentist or doctor gives you different instructions for the procedure you had.

Medicines

Take pain relief and any other medicines exactly as your treating practitioner advises. Avoid sleeping tablets or other sedating medicines unless you have been told they are safe.

For the person looking after you

Stay with the patient for the rest of the day. Make sure they rest, drink fluids and take their medicines as instructed.

When to seek help

Contact Dr Khan or your treating practitioner if you are worried about anything after the procedure. If there is difficulty breathing, chest pain, or the patient is very hard to wake, call an ambulance immediately.
