Sedation for dermatology and skin procedures

Sedation for dermatology and skin procedures

Most skin procedures are done under local anaesthetic alone. But some, such as removing several lesions at once, larger excisions or more extensive laser treatments, can be long or uncomfortable. For anxious patients and children, even smaller procedures can be stressful.

When sedation may help

  • Removal of multiple moles or lesions in one session
  • Larger excisions and reconstruction after skin cancer removal
  • Some laser and resurfacing treatments
  • Children or anxious adults who need a skin procedure

How it works with local anaesthetic

Your dermatologist still uses local anaesthetic to numb the skin. Sedation adds a layer of calm and comfort, so you are relaxed and time passes quickly. Many patients remember little of the procedure.

In the dermatologist’s rooms

Joburg Sedation is a mobile service. Dr Khan and her team member bring all their own monitoring and emergency equipment to your dermatologist’s practice, so there is no need to book a hospital theatre.

After the procedure

You rest until you are awake enough to leave, then go home with a responsible adult. Follow your dermatologist’s wound care instructions, and avoid driving, alcohol and important decisions for the rest of the day.
