Your sedation day: before, during and after

Knowing what to expect takes a lot of the worry out of a procedure. Here is what usually happens when you have sedation with Joburg Sedation.

Before your appointment

  • Dr Khan will ask about your medical history, any medicines you take and any previous reactions to sedation or anaesthesia.
  • You will receive fasting instructions. Follow them exactly, because an empty stomach is important for safe sedation.
  • Ask before you stop or change any medicine. Never stop prescribed medication unless you are told to.
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you afterwards.

On the day

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing with sleeves that roll up easily.
  • Remove nail polish from at least one finger, as it can interfere with oxygen monitoring.
  • Dr Khan and her team member set up the monitors and place a small drip in your hand or arm.
  • The sedation is given gradually until you are relaxed, and then your dentist or doctor starts the procedure.

Throughout the procedure, two health practitioners monitor your ECG (heart rhythm), oxygen level, heart rate and blood pressure.

Afterwards

You rest under observation until you are awake enough to go home. Your escort will receive written aftercare instructions.

For the rest of the day, do not drive, operate machinery, drink alcohol, make important decisions or sign legal documents. Dr Khan will tell you how long these precautions apply in your case.

When to call

If anything worries you after the procedure, contact Dr Khan or your treating practitioner. In an emergency, call an ambulance.
